VINTAGE PLASTIC JEWELLERY

So our jewellery education continues today me thinks!

I have collected these charming 1930s brooches for a while and have decided to do a bit more investigation. They seem to go well with a lovely 30s embroidered and appliqued tablecloth!

Before I read a great article by Beverley Bennett a member of the Plastic Historical Society I only knew that these were made mostly in America from remnants of plastic. Originally going back to the 1930s....

they would be shaped and reversed carved and then painted ... perhaps with a bowl of flowers....

....or..... a bunch of flowers....

or a geometric flowered design....

or a crinoline lady walking in her garden...

She goes into a lot more historical detail and it is worth taking a look! Again, the fantastic Schiffer publishing house have produced a great reference book. Lyngerda Kelley & Nancy Schiffer. Plastic Jewelery. Schiffer Publishing, 1987. Also, The Plastic Historical Society have a very interesting article on these fabulous brooches!
