Battle Proms
So.... a visit to the Battle Proms at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire on 23rd July 2011 was a great day out. A picnic with music that lead into an evening of spectacular fireworks and canon fire set to music!! I have seen some sights in my time but it was like a picnic city .... people who had definitely done this before had gazebos, full lighting (that was turned on when the sun went down) tables, chairs and you name everything you could imagine for a picnic in comfort. Philipa and I had two bags, one with food and drink, one with some blankets and a brolly each... fingers crossed... and for once it didn't rain all day!!
I guess it is called battle because it has lots of historical references IE the spitfire flying over, the French vs English officers from the Napoleonic Wars on horseback treating us to Calvary displays. All had authentic Antique costumes of the era depicting their rank ....also there were canons to be let off to the 1812 Overture, musket fire and various ladies and gentlemen walking around in historic costumes!
I would say it is like having a picnic, with classical music and suddenly Napoleon wonders by and a spitfire rolls overhead... there was about 7000 people there on Saturday all good natured fun.... to top it off there was food and fireworks.... the only trouble was finding our car afterwards and getting out of the grounds of Hatfield House. If you decide to go to one of these up and coming events just make sure that you have some kind of marker by which to find your cars ...... you might be needing to camp there otherwise as since some fields are turned into car parks there is no lighting and almost completely in the dark... at least we weren't the only ones looking for our car!!
